It’s February, and while that does still mean snow, and slogging through it to carry buckets to the water trough or feed to the barn, and mucking out stalls that are partially frozen while my own hands start freezing, it’s also …. seed catalogue time! Most of them actually arrive through January, but by February they’re all here and I can look through them and compare.

I really like seed catalogues, and have a growing fondness for the ones with descriptions that go beyond the type, growth habit and yield of produce to wax eloquent over the history of the variety of bean or pea or squash or (so on), and its flavour, and the origin of its name, and other neat little tidbits. It’s so nice to see the increase in availability of heirloom and organic seeds, and supplies, and the excitement you can sense when you read someone’s description of something they really like. All the seed companies from which I order have websites with what’s in their catalogue, so if you are curious, I order (or plan to order this year) from, in alphabetical order: Cottage Gardener, T&T seeds, Terra Edibles, Vesey’s, and William Dam. I know there are many others out there, and I am slowly adding to my list, but there are just SO many that a line will need to be drawn somewhere or I’ll end up getting 50 every year and my husband will lose his mind.

I am also planning my garden, what to add this year, if I want to omit anything from last year, what I will rotate to where, what may have self-seeded (like my entire herb garden!). I’m also looking forward to more time in my garden now that we have finished building our house, and to working on those projects that were put on hold last year so we could get the house done. And I’m looking forward to my CSA again, because I enjoyed that last season! So if you’re interested, have a look through the other pages on the site, and get in touch with me if you have questions or want to sign up.
